Increased emphasis is being placed on the ability to evaluate the short and long term impact of our programs - in particular to our funding source. Defining success and implementing a meaningful system with which to measure it are challenges that many of us now face. Please share your ideas about what is working for you - we all can benefit from your knowledge.

We are pleased to announce the release of our new website, Management Assistance for Child Welfare, Work First, and Food & Nutrition Services in North Carolina at http://ssw.unc.edu/ma/. We have combined information for social services programs from three different websites into one completely redesigned website with a more user-friendly interface.

In addition to an updated look for the website, there are several new features that include:

¨ Data are organized into a helpful “file cabinet” system. Each drawer represents a different social services program and users can easily move from one program to another.

¨ The ability to print data tables and charts to a PDF file or print from the screen.

¨ A helpful button at the top of the page that allows users to select data for a certain region, such as North Carolina as a whole or a particular county, and easily switch to another region without going back to the main page.

We have also added new content:

Child Welfare

¨ Information on youth aging out of foster care.

¨ More detailed information on foster care placement types, such as therapeutic foster homes and jail, detention or runaway.

Work First

¨ The Work First Experiences Report, which includes state and county participation rates, the number of adults entering employment and scheduled activities information.

We hope that the new look and features of the website make it easier for users to access data about children and families served by social services programs in North Carolina. Please note that our old websites for child welfare (http://ssw.unc.edu/cw/), Work First (http://ssw.unc.edu/workfirst/), and Food & Nutrition Services (http://ssw.unc.edu/foodstamps/) will only remain active until October 2009.
About Us

With the support and collaboration of the North Carolina Division of Social Services, staff and faculty at the Jordan Institute for Families at the UNC-CH School of Social Work established and maintain a public website with performance data for three major social services programs including child welfare, Food and Nutrition Services (formerly Food Stamps) and Work First (TANF). The website is unique in the use of longitudinal data on individuals and families to track outcomes over time and in updating available information on a monthly basis.
I just received this message from Leslie Jackson, at KidsPeace. "I met you at the panel discussion about Independent Living Skills this summer, bought your video, and have shown it to my staff, who all loved it and obviously find it very relevant to our work." Leslie is the Clinical Supervisor for KidsPeace and works with therapeutic foster parents. After showing the ON THEIR WAY DVD to staff, they decided to develop foster parent training and a youth life skills program using this program along with the website On Your Way.

Intervening with Gang Involved Youth

        A few tips:

1. The best way to engage gang members is privately. You will be more successful with intervention efforts when you intervene or redirect behavior in isolation from other youth when possible.

2. Establish you group home, foster, home, school, or other physical space as "Neutral Territory." Do this by orienting new youth to your program in a manner that informs them of your awareness of gangs in your area and have them sign a contract that acknowledges your programs physical space as neutral territory. Post signs that indicate your space as neutral territory or safe zone.

3. Do not make disrespectful or dismissive remarks about gangs in front of any youth in your care. Make youth aware of your concern for their safety and the risks associated with gang involvement, but do not make blatantly derogatory comments or generalizations about gangs. Youth often see the gang as their family and even though the gang often promotes anti-social attitudes and behaviors, the youth may not be able to see what you see. You want to be able to gain the youths respect over time to move away from gang activity and your ability to do this will depend on how they perceive your understanding of where they come from in gang culture.

4. Be knowledgable about gangs in your community. Develop a relationship with local gang outreach staff (if available) or the police gang unit. Have them present to you and your staff on the local gang activity, locations where gangs exist, and gang trends in your community.

These are a few tips. More to come later!
