Areas of expertise: Workplace Safety and Domestic Violence
Johnny is the Executive Director of Peace@Work, a non-profit dedicated to the prevention of violence in and through the workplace. Among their accomplishments, they produced the Workplace Campaign to End Domestic Violence, empowering community educator advocates to do outreach to their business community. His experience includes Training Director for the UNC-Chapel Hill Injury Prevention Research Center’s PREVENT program and delivering a national violence prevention training program. He was previously the Workplace Violence Specialist for the Office of State Personnel in Raleigh, North Carolina. His responsibilities included consulting state agencies on the development and revision of their workplace violence programs. Johnny implemented the Batterers Treatment Certification Program for the State of North Carolina.
Professional association memberships includes Chair of the Victim Services Interagency Council of North Carolina, Board of Directors for the Businesses Continuity Planners of the Carolinas, American Society of Safety Engineers, Public Health Alliance to Prevent Violence against Women, and former board member of the NC Victim Assistance Network.
HRD Press has published his human resources book, Addressing Domestic Violence in the Workplace in 2004. He also co-authored the Armed Robbery Preparation Manual, a training resource for front line clerks and bank tellers to survive a robbery and support the investigations. Other publications include articles in The Journal of Safe Management of Disruptive and Assaultive Behavior. He also manages www.peaceatwork.org.
Previously, as the Victim Services Coordinator for the Asheville Police Department, Johnny headed up a unit of staff and volunteer advocates delivering assistance to victims from the crime scene through to sentencing and beyond. As an outdoor enthusiast, Johnny led Outward Bound programs for six years; from dog-sledding in Maine to white water paddling on the Rio Grande.
